PACCAR has implemented an innovative program to track internal energy usage and to collaborate on new energy conservation measures. The company holds internal forums on energy conservation successes to leverage facility project knowledge into company-wide conservation measures. PACCAR also participates in Puget Sound Energy's (PSE) Green Power Program which is one of the top 10 Green Power Programs in the United States. (source: National Renewable Energy Laboratory, 12/2004). PACCAR is the first industrial company to participate in the Green Power Program.

Specific examples of energy conservation success include:

    • Installing variable frequency drives wherever possible on existing hard-start electric motor drive systems
    • Updating older electrical motors to higher efficiency newer designs
    • Reduce plant compressor air pressure where possible and add surge tanks to regulate usage
    • Identify and eliminate plant compressed air system leaks
    • Replace sodium and mercury vapor lighting with lights with pulse start ballasts
    • Install reflective roof coatings on new and existing facilities
    • Install HVAC control system upgrades to operate systems and control zones only when needed

Before required by local regulations, PACCAR implemented measures to reduce annual emissions of Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs) over 200 tons per year. The company's toxic emission reduction strategies include:

    • Introducing low HAPs chassis and cab paint
    • Reducing Cab/Touch-up Wash and Prime
    • Substituting non-HAPs Gun Wash
    • Adding air sparging process to clean paint lines more efficiently
    • Substituting non-HAPs adhesives and sealing compounds
    • Eliminating toxics from our production process, where possible.

Since 2005, PACCAR has been one of the leading Fortune 500 companies in the United States on the Best Workplaces for Commuters program. PACCAR actively encourages and aids employees in finding alternative ways of commuting with transit/vanpool pass subsidy, carpool/vanpool incentives, showers and bike lockers, the Guaranteed Ride Home Program and more.
