Ecodesign team
DAF has had an EcoDesign Team as early as 1998 whose specific objective is to contribute sustainable options in the development of products and components. In other words, they seek smart solutions that are not only good for the environment, but that also make further improvements to the truck’s efficiency. The AS-tronic, the automatic gearbox that DAF supplies in the CF and XF series, is a good example. The AS-tronic is nearly 70 kg lighter than a manual gearbox and also provides optimum shifting performance. This not only cuts fuel consumption, but also exhaust emissions. Another of the team’s tasks is providing environmental training to design engineers and making sure that they are kept up to date on environmental developments. A special EcoDesign Newsletter was created for this purpose.
EcoDesign tool
To help DAF’s product developers with environmentally conscious construction, DAF has a unique tool: the EcoDesign tool. This electronic instrument is accessible via DAF’s intranet and provides engineers with information to optimise the products’ recyclability, to effectively reduce weight and to minimize the environmental impacts of production. The designer can also use the tool to perform a life cycle analysis of the designed product.
